Mycorrhized Plants

Plants mycorrhized with truffle must be produced in accordance with strict nursery visa protocol.
The young plants from seeds, cutting or mycropropagation must be prepared in a sterile environment; in order to prevent the settlement of poisonous fungi before mycorrhization. The substratum, very carefully steam sterilized, must have all the physical and chemical parameters suitable for truffle. The inoculation is made up of first quality truffle bought from selected suppliers.

All the truffle bought for mycorrhization must be put under very careful analysis in order to verify: which group the desired species belongs to, the suitability and degree of spore ripening.

The mycorrhization (seed inoculation) is carried out in spring, in our laboratory by experienced staff following strict regulation procedures. The growth of the plants in modern structures is constantly supervised by staff technicians in order to obtain well mycorrhized, balanced plants. All groups of plants are subdivided into numbered homogeneous groups, well identifiable and contactable thanks to constant updated register for loading and unloading.

Raggi Vivai has always invested in experimental research in order to improve the quality of mycorrhized plants and to identify new nursery techniques which show productive and qualitative progress for a more modern truffle cultivation.

The plants produced by Raggi Vivai are controlled and certified by:
  • L'Aquila University Ambient Sciences Department;
  • Perugia University Plant Biology Department.

The best species for truffle cultivation are oaks. In Europe there is a wide variety of oak hybrids and species. In Italy the most used is Quercus pubescens, but in certain conditions Quercus ilex, Quercus cerris and Quercus robur are used. Corylus avellana (hazelnut), Ostrya carpinifolia (european hop), Pinus pinea (pine) and Tilia spp. (lime tree) are used quite a lot. Often, in the truffle plantations, many of these species are mixed with oaks.
Raggi Vivai can produce under contract plants with oak seeds supplied by the foreign customers.

Mychorrhization is a relation which is installed in nature between the truffle and the host plant. The truffle in fact is not a parasite plant fungus and the inter-exchange which it creates is positive for both species; the truffle draws sugars and starches from the plant which alone could not produce and the plant thanks to mycorrhization, increases its own radical absorption which allows it to live in difficult environmental and pedological conditions.
Mycorrhization forms on the root apices of the young roots and reproduces by itself thanks both to the mycelium produced by the truffles which when remaining in the ground, decompose thus freeing the spores.
The truffles have their favorite species and are not able to establish any mycorrhization contact with other arboreal or herbaceous species. There are some other mycorrhized fungus which compete often by dominating the truffles; already being present in the ground, they very much prevent or reduce the probability of precious truffles from reproducing and bearing fruit. The nursery artificially recreates this relation by processing the truffles in order to extract the spores, producing young sterile plants, sterilizing the substratum culture to prevent pollution and carefully following the growth of the young plant until it is controlled, certified and put on the market.
